Are There Any Expert Geophysics Book Reviewers Out There? - August 12, 2012

DOES ANYONE KNOW ANY EXPERT GEOPHYSICS BOOK REVIEWERS?

First the following before discussing Chris’ note.

If this book is as important as I believe it might be, then we need to find someone who works in this field here in the U.S. who can review the book in detail and send his or her book review to various news services, government agencies, and university geology departments. I myself could help with the notification process but could not do an evaluation as I am not an expert in geophysics.

Perhaps Dr. Whiteside who used to post notes to this bulletin board might be interested in such an effort. I seem to remember that he is a geophysicist. Does anyone know how he could be contacted?

Chris,

You should read both of my notes again.

Where, in either one of them, does it say that the heat waves traveling downward in the Earth have anything to do with earthquakes?

That subject matter was “Plate Tectonics” and why continents get larger in size over millions and billions of years relative to the ocean surface size, and why tectonic plates move relative to one another over those same time spans. Expansion and contraction processes along plate boundaries are of course discussed in detail in the book.

There was nothing in either of my notes about earthquakes related to those heat wave processes. Earthquake forecasting is discussed in a different part of the book that I did not cover in my postings.

Remember, this book was written by a fairly large number of very experienced geophysicists and other researchers. It has something like 30 pages of references to other science papers and books written in a variety of languages that they read and evaluated in preparing their own book. I am not an expert on geology as I said. But they are.

Also, the book authors have contacted me and said that my description of that “ratcheting” mechanism for tectonic plate movement and continent growth was overly simple (as I said it would be), but basically accurate.

The reason that they are talking with me instead of posting notes here directly is probably largely due to the fact that English is a second or third language for some of them. And others might not even speak English. So it is easier for me to interpret what they are saying and then reword it as readable English for posting to English language bulletin boards.

These are personal opinions.
