Dear John,

as you are interested in tidal waves for a long time, you must know that the amplitude of solid Earth tides decreases with the depth and in the Earth centre is zero. We measure tides in the Central Europe, thousands kilometers far from ocean, where ocean tides are less than solid Earth tides.

Yes, diurnal thermoelastic waves are sometimes greater than solid Earth tides. Melchior and Skalsky (1956) measured the tides in the deepest Czech mine in Pribram and they found that amplitude of diurnal waves were 3 - 10 times greater than according to the theory.

Now, we measure these diurnal thermoelastic wavaes in the depths about 200 m below the surface and THOUSANDS kilometers far from the focal area. They were visible before Kurily EQ in 2008, before Sichuan EQ in 2010, now and in many other cases.
