Why would ground movement 'ratchet' when caused by thermoelastic processes but not other processes which result in the same or similar movement? such as earth tides, tidal loading (ocean tidal loading), elastic rebound, strain redistribution, etc... or even the passing of strong motions from large earthquakes?

Basically, how does the earth know when to ratchet and when not to?

I would buy the book if I had the money, but not having an income...
