Hyped? Well, if you are not in the vast majority of Angelenos, then you'll die or become badly hurt. That leaves a considerable minority of casualties...perhaps a hundred thousand or more, depending upon time of quake, actual epicenter, etc. The consequences of ruined infrastructure (including water supplies) would have devastating results for almost all of the population.

Since we can't prevent or accurately predict quakes, preparation is the only practical action that we can take. This includes stringent building codes, education of the populace, and common sense.

As for the 1/150 odds...I can't really speak to that except to say that the further you are from one quake, the closer you are to the next.
