I'm with John on this. There is no excuse for "journalists" to not report factually. Period. And the reason for the inaccuracies is dishonesty - either a desire to increase readership by sensationalism, or failure to take the care to report accurately as the reporter was undoubtedly taught to do. The reason for the inaccuracies is NOT to awaken people to the danger. Why would a reporter take it upon his or herself to do that? The worst-case scenario I've heard for the greater LA area death toll in a largest plausible quake scenario is 20,000, which would be on the order of one out of every 1,000 inhabitants.
