Re: Reno earthquakes

These just caught my attention (because once it got over "4" makes a bigger rectangle on map). I'm interested in what the type is...what focal mechnism, but oddly there is not a focal mechanism given...even for a 4.1 a couple of days ago. I could joke about a government plot and nuclear tests, but someone might take me seriously so I'll just assume it is the mole people.

I don't know the geology there very well, but the Walker Lane belt of right-lateral faults may be around there and it is also near the west edge of the Basin and Range, which is stretching, with normal fault earthquakes expected. Far to the south along the same trend are massive volcanic calderas at Long Valley-Mammoth Mountain and at Mono Lake. Roy(?) Bailey thought that Mono might be more dangerous than Long Valley...he lead a field trip around Long Valley that I was at in 1988.

Anyone know if there are any young (less than 1 million yrs) volcanic rocks near quake?

Please do link anything on the type of quakes/fault systems involved. My sister and brother will be in the Nevada City area tomorrow-Monday and I imagine my cousin who lives north of there must have felt the 4.7 at least.

Ethical question, if a quake makes a slot machine start spewing quarters, so you get to keep them? Reno has $2 of mine from 1980. Well, actually, the motel gave us the $2 to get us started. I lost mine and that was enough for me. Gambling cities depress me.
