I think the reviews of Berkland's recent biography are fun, as they include an effusive commentary by Jim himself.

I added a review myself, but am posting this partly as a mea culpa for an omission in my comments. I pointed out the statements by Jim that are most at odds with my point of view as a scientist, but forgot to mention the tides, where my disagreement with syzygy is likely to be harder to explain to Amazon readers.

Briefly, my own work finds that the largest tides can affect the timing of earthquakes, but such large tides only are found in a few places and at a few times, none on the west coast of the US. For most earthquakes, I see no noticeable influence of tides.

Jim claims, to the degree that one can tell what he claims, at least 3 to 4 times higher rates of earthquakes in his windows both locally and globally, which simply is not true.

Perhaps I should have added my objections about Jim's tidal claims in my review, but it seemed too complicated for such a short piece of literature. However, for earthquake prediction affectionados such as read and post here, I thought I should give a more complete statement.
