Re: Earthquake Are Not Triggered

Hi Canie. Darn. You found me out.

I was kind of poking fun at myself as well as others. My onion and garlic sandwiches with a Corona chaser is based on triggering.

Actually my statement about not being triggered is true in some ways. Not all quakes are triggered. They are caused by attrition. The strain at a certain point accumulates until it reaches the breaking point. Some of them are triggered a few days or weeks before they would have occurred of their own accord. This is why the major quakes are so hard to predict. The location of the needed strain accumulation required to cause a major quake isn’t really known and more importantly the amount of strain that has accumulated for the most part isn’t known.

In the Bay Area there are 3 locations where it is felt the next major quake will occur. One is the San Andreas fault in the area between Portola Valley and the San Francisco Peninsula. The Rodgers Creek fault from about Santa Rosa south to the San Pablo Bay is another area. On the Hayward fault it is the area between San Leandro south to Fremont. This is based on the lack of small quakes giving an indication that there is very little creep in these areas. The problem is further compounded by not knowing the true amount of strain accumulation and how much will be required to cause a major quake. In other words how much stain does it require to break the area that is locked? Take Care…Don in creepy town
