Hollister Quake |
Hi All. After viewing the “moment tensor solution” from Berkeley tonight I’m fairly reasonable sure that yesterdays quake didn’t occur on the San Andreas fault. That leaves two faults. The Calaveras and the Paicines fault. USGS says the quake was on the Paicines fault. That is a small fault located to the east of the Calaveras fault, which is located to the east of the San Andreas fault, which is located south of where I live. How you can get 3 faults into such a tight space and still have room for a quake is a little hard for me to understand. There can’t be much more then 5 miles separating the whole mess. The better half tells me there was no warning. One moment there was nothing and then the next moment if felt like a truck hit the side of the house. There was a big bang and a lot of noise and shaking. So much so she thought it was the Loma Prieta quake all over again. Just as quick as it started it ended. The only thing damaged was the nerves. This quake of this magnitude is the closest one we have had in this area for a spell now. We have to have one like this every now and then to keep us honest. After all we are “the earthquake capital of the world” despite what Parkfield says. We get almost as many quakes per week as they do per month, or maybe a couple of months. The nice thing about it though is that we don’t feel 98% of them. I think it would tend to get on one nerves if we felt all of them.
