I agree on the mags.

One problem I have on Syzygy is that Jim will hunt around until he finds someone quoting a mag. within his predicted range, just to boost his hit ratio.

His argument is that mag. is subject to variation depending on the data available to the network. I say it's just data selection on his part.

My practice is to use a NEIC search and use the largest magnitude that they quote.

That's arbitrary too and NEIC is not always the best source, particularly for small CA quakes but it's the most readily available to me and the one I know best.

Perfect solutions are not attainable for things like this.
