Scientists Considered Quake Warning After Swarm on San Andreas :

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) 1.17.02, 5:05p -- Seismologists revealed
Thursday they were concerned that a swarm of temblors that struck
the Salton Sea area in November foreshadowed a large earthquake
on the San Andreas fault and they considered a public warning.

Lucy Jones, scientist in charge at the U.S. Geological Survey's
Southern California office, told reporters that seismologists initially
thought the Nov. 13 swarm could have been followed by a rupture of
the southernmost section of the state's most notorious fault. Such an
event could have led to a major earthquake. The last such quake in
that area of southeastern California, believed to have been of
magnitude-7.5, struck in 1680.
