Re: exaggerated claims, global warming |
Good letter, Chris. Very concise. The existence and anthropogenic nature of global warming have now been so well established that the theories (usually suggesting that huge numbers of scientists' careers depend on their jumping on board, and that they are all so craven as to do so) in opposition are becoming increasingly silly. Those of us who aren't equipped with the education or intelligence to fully and independently evaluate all the evidence in this very complex subject are best served by going along with the consensus opinion of those who are so-equpped. Those who do otherwise are either ideologically or fiscally motivated, or just plain like taking contrary opinions. Historically, when the scientific establishment is in general agreement on something, it is overwhelmingly likely to turn out to be a good description of reality. And I'm like Jimmy the Greek - I go with the odds. If you get a chance, pick up the May 28 issue of The Nation, for another global-warming sceptic's article, "Who Are The Merchants of Fear?," by Alexander Cockburn. Cockburn is a very entertaining and intelligent writer, and, if he can be categorized at all, is considered a progressive, but his argument in that article seems to me to just be stupid. Along with a somewhat new twist on the "all those scientists are wrong" theory, is his opinion that the energy industry is in support of the global warming theory(!!), because they have invested heavily in the nuclear power industry . . .
