Expanding on some inspiration from other's posts...try to show some of the ideas that DID NOT pan out. Show scientists as exploring all ideas and how they weed out the bad ones.

Some other specific ideas are:

Ross Stein's works on coulomb stress mapping. Show lots of pretty pictures and how the stress changes after large quakes can affect and effect later quakes eg Landers triggering the Big Bear aftershock and eventual some years later Hector Mine.

Get with Susan Hough re her book "Finding Fault in California." Show how there are faults all around us, that every series of hills is there for a reason. This shows that we live in a land that was made by earthquakes. Not to scare, but make people aware of the need to study them for our future safety.

Then there's the San Diego Supercomputer Center and Southern California Earthquake Center with all those really cool simulation movies they've made showing various earthquake scenarios they've done. I find the Puente Hills simulation particularly unnerving.

Tie it all together by showing that what the scientists are trying to figure out where and how the ground may/will shake in the future and how it drives the need for building and highway construction codes.

That's all I've got off the top of my head.
