Re: 2.0 on top of Shasta |
Yup. The location was only "fair" on this. 14 miles E. of the City of Mt. Shasta puts the quake almost directly under the main cone of Shasta. However, the mountain is actually huge and high, so exact placement of the quake focus could be tricky. Yes--I checked the topo out also, and looks as if the quake might have been on the SE edge of the mountain, nearer the little town of McCloud (where Nestle wants to put a big bottling plant and suck groundwater out.) After the holidays, think I'll wander up to the College of the Siskiyous and meet the resident geologist there for a chat. Everything I have read about the mountain says a 1 in 4 chance of eruption in a human lifetime. I'm five generations from my great-great grandparents who moved here in the 1890s. "Never tell me the odds," as Captain Kirk used to say. The entire area around here is dotted with volcanic features--it is a wonderland for people who like rocks. Not just for Shasta itself, but many cinder cones, shield volcanoes, etc. We have also had numerous landslides, lahars, etc. around here in the last few hundred years, some as late as the 1980s and not necessarily related to volcanic activity. It is actually a really dumb place to site a permanent residence. So here I am. (GRINS) Anyway, just always worth noting when shallow quakes appear on or near a Cascade stratovolcanic giant. Particularly when I happen to live near one.
