I hitched to Mt St Helens area about Aug 2000. I hiked in on logging roads but had no map....I would not have even seen it but it erupted while I was hiking...kind of like a billowing thundercloud on horizon. It seemed quite distant; I was probably 15 or 20 km north or NNW of it. People were killed that far away to the NNE in May 1980.
Also have walked on Moana Loa and Kiluea (sp?), hiked up Etna and Stromboli to tops, was at Crater Lake and Mt Hood about 1964 (dating myself here, Mt Shasta (drove by and went by on train, Mt Lassen (hiked back to Bumpass Hell, otherwise was car), Long Valley, Mono Lake, Jemez (sp?)...New Mexico, Erebus (Antarctica, from sea level). Only Erebus was work-related.
