Chris Question

Hi Chris,

I have run into a bit of a brick wall in retrieving information I wanted to receive and I wonder if you know of any way to secure it.

There was a research project done by Costas Synolakis, et al. about the potential for Catalina Island to have a 7.4 quake with resulting tsunami at Long Beach. I wanted to secure the damage estimates and potential casualty figures and he told me to contact a man at Caltech which I did. He told me that there is a program that the OES has called HAZUS but only people who work for the government, especially local government to the area can request the information.

So I've hit a brick wall on this one. So is there a backdoor to this info or is there another source that I am unaware of? If you have any ideas, please let me know.

I think I know fairly well what the figures might be, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't to far off. So let me ask if you have a 7.7 quake at Catalina, does the 25 miles to shore offer a large buffer or not? I know it helps, but how much? And wouldn't it level all of the structures on San Clemente Island in the process?

Petra
