Re: 8.2 Northern Sumatra...is there a tsunami? |
I have to admit that Shan was close on this one. The Pacific tsunami warning center does say that a widely destructive tsunami is possible. Since this quake just happened, the magnitude may actually be different.... Let's look to see if a tsunami has already occurred opposite the rupture...if it has and it was large, then people at greater distances should look for warnings, or to be on the safe side, get to some elevation. It is possible that in this area of northern Sumatra information on tsunamis will not get out fast enough Follow Ups: ● Re: 8.2 Northern Sumatra...is there a tsunami? - Cathryn 10:26:03 - 3/28/2005 (25373) (0) ● May be 8.5, presume there is tsunami - chris in suburbia 10:13:37 - 3/28/2005 (25372) (4) ● upgraded to 8.7 by USGS - chris in suburbia 11:40:16 - 3/28/2005 (25382) (0) ● "small" tsunami 1500 km S of epicenter - chris in suburbia 11:07:03 - 3/28/2005 (25380) (0) ● NOAA tsunami statement - chris in suburbia 10:49:05 - 3/28/2005 (25379) (0) ● still no confirmation of tsunami - chris in suburbia 10:33:02 - 3/28/2005 (25374) (1) ● low-angle thrust mechanism - chris in suburbia 10:38:29 - 3/28/2005 (25376) (1) ● 41st anniversary of M9.2 Alaska quake - chris in suburbia 10:46:27 - 3/28/2005 (25378) (0) ● cnn.com says NOAA says evacuate coast within 1000 km - chris in suburbia 10:01:22 - 3/28/2005 (25371) (0) ● cnn.com says NOAA says evacuate coast within 1000 km - chris in suburbia 10:01:15 - 3/28/2005 (25370) (0) |
