Why should it work?

Does he say why? 102-105 could be related to the P and S body waves going into diffraction, but why this would trigger seismicity is not clear. The body waves are smaller and shorter-period than the surface waves, which do not diffract, and going into diffraction just means that they get smaller still with increasing distance.
