strong geomagentic storm today

The NOAA Kp index has been in the red all day, with levels as high as 8 (I think that would be called a major storm-the scale only goes to 9.) The odd thing is there was no significant flare activity (the X-ray flux has been low), and NOAA did not predict the storm.....gee, the blackout must have triggered the storm? (kidding). It has been a long time since we have seen Kp 8 (I think). I used to be convinced (by Lowell) that there was a clear geomagnetic-EQ link-now any effect seems to me to be weak, if there is anyhthing at all (there are a few intraplate quakes that seemed interesting, however). So, how did I go from thinking there was a relation to questioning it? Chris
