Energy Islands – May 1, 2013

This is an indirect address for a slightly modified copy of a report titled “Energy Islands” that I have been sending to U.S. Policy Makers since around October of 2012.

The basic idea is the following:

Our world is in desperate need of environmentally safe, affordable energy. And if you really do an accurate assessment of what we might possibly get from fossil fuels from any type of operation including all of the “fracking” that could possibly be done, nothing would come even close to being able to provide us with all of the energy what we need.

So, as far as I can determine there are just three energy sources that could meet our world demand:

Solar Energy Harvested in Outer Space

SAFE Nuclear Fission Based Powerplants

Energy Islands

That report says a few words about the first two energy sources and goes into a fair amount of detail regarding how to build the Energy Islands.

Energy Islands would be gigantic floating structures that would be anchored out in the ocean and out of people’s way. They would be able to harvest a sizeable variety of energy forms including solar, wind, wave, ocean thermal layer, and ocean current energy. The energy they collected would then be converted to some transportable form such as liquid hydrogen or aluminum metal. That metal burns with a ferocious heat in a pure oxygen atmosphere with a relatively safe, gritty aluminum oxide power byproduct that can be recycled to aluminum metal. Robot ships would stop at each Energy Island now and then, collect the stored energy, and transport it back to the mainland.

They would have a secondary benefit in that machinery on the islands could mix carbon dioxide from fossil fuel burning plus some ocean water plus some minerals and let various forms of plankton convert the carbon dioxide dissolved in the water to biomass. Fish for humans to eat that were growing in pens near or under the Energy Islands could then dine on the plankton and be harvested when they were the right size.
