5. Scientific language does not make a science. Dressing up a belief system in the trappings of science by using scientistic language and jargon, as in "creation-science," means nothing without evidence, experimental testing, and corroboration. Because science has such a powerful mystique in our society, those who wish to gain respectability but do not have any evidence try to do an end run around the missing evidence by looking and sounding "scientific." Here is a classic example from a New Age Column in the Santa Monica News: "This planet has been slumbering for eons and with the inception of higher energy frequencies is about to awaken in terms of consciousness and spirituality. Masters of limitation and masters of divination use the same creative force to manifest their realities, however, one moves in a downward spiral and the latter moves in an upward spiral, each increasing the resonant vibration inherent in them." How's that again? I have no idea what this means, but it has the language components of a physics experiment: "higher energy frequencies," "downward and upward spirals," and "resonant vibration." Yet these phrases mean nothing because they have no precise and operational definitions. How do you measure a planet's higher energy frequencies or the resonant vibration of masters of divination? For that matter, what is a master of divination? - Michael Shermer, Twenty-five Fallacies That Lead Us to Believe Weird Things, from "Why People Believe Weird Things". http://www.skywise711.com/Skeptic/WPBWT/index.html Brian Follow Ups: ● Re: John V. or ? - Mike Williams in Arroyo Grande 06:16:16 - 7/7/2007 (72117) (2) ● Re: John V. or ? - Skywise 22:10:36 - 7/7/2007 (72124) (2) ● Re: John V. or ? - Mike Williams in Arroyo Grande 06:39:38 - 7/9/2007 (72129) (2) ● Conservapedia - Skywise 23:14:54 - 7/10/2007 (72139) (2) ● Re: Conservapedia - Skywise 22:42:20 - 7/11/2007 (72146) (0) ● Re: Conservapedia - Mike Williams in Arroyo Grande 06:55:37 - 7/11/2007 (72140) (1) ● Re: Conservapedia - Cathryn 16:23:46 - 7/11/2007 (72144) (1) ● Re: Conservapedia - Skywise 22:18:37 - 7/11/2007 (72145) (2) ● OT Columbia - Cathryn 23:41:28 - 7/11/2007 (72148) (1) ● Re: OT Columbia - Skywise 01:50:11 - 7/12/2007 (72149) (1) ● Re: OT Columbia/Heartland Chris - Cathryn 07:44:56 - 7/12/2007 (72150) (1) ● Re: OT Columbia/Heartland Chris - heartland chris 10:00:09 - 7/12/2007 (72151) (1) ● Re: OT Columbia/Heartland Chris - Cathryn 11:57:07 - 7/12/2007 (72152) (0) ● Re: Conservapedia - Cathryn 23:38:30 - 7/11/2007 (72147) (0) ● Wikipedia - Skywise 21:46:37 - 7/10/2007 (72138) (0) ● wikipedia is handy - John Vidale 22:49:59 - 7/7/2007 (72125) (1) ● Re: wikipedia is handy - Skywise 20:09:09 - 7/8/2007 (72127) (1) ● valuable resource - John Vidale 23:14:28 - 7/8/2007 (72128) (1) ● Re: valuable resource - Mike Williams in Arroyo Grande 07:13:36 - 7/9/2007 (72130) (1) ● not my writing - John Vidale 08:39:15 - 7/9/2007 (72132) (1) ● patched up some of the problems - John Vidale 09:44:56 - 7/10/2007 (72136) (1) ● scientific journals sometimes have junk - heartland chris 10:16:43 - 7/10/2007 (72137) (0) ● Alan Sokal - Cathryn 19:50:39 - 7/7/2007 (72123) (1) ● Re: Alan Sokal - Mike Williams in Arroyo Grande 10:28:12 - 7/9/2007 (72134) (1) ● Re: Alan Sokal - Cathryn 14:27:15 - 7/11/2007 (72143) (0) ● Re: John V. or ? - Glen 02:10:01 - 7/7/2007 (72114) (1) ● Re: John V. or ? - Mike Williams in Arroyo Grande 06:21:21 - 7/7/2007 (72118) (1) ● agreed - John Vidale 07:21:33 - 7/7/2007 (72119) (0) |
