Same thing repeated over and over |
It seems to me that, over and over, the same thing is being found in areas of these quakes - building codes are not enforced, inspectors or builders or politicians are accepting bribes to look the other way. Its happened in Turkey, El Salvador, India - how many others? We may not be able to predict earthquakes but we surely know how to build to have less death and damage during one. The additional expense is maybe 10% on new construction? I understand the homeowners view of costs associated with retro-fitting. First you want to pay the outrageous home-heating bills then worry about possible quake damage! It doesn't seem to have the priority of day to day stuff. But it is a lot cheaper than 'earthquake' insurance in the long run. If we can do anything, its to get the buildings built safer - enforce existing laws. I guess it gets down to the greedy persons that don't really care - I really hope they live in poorly constructed high-rises.
