Its not only what happens if its bigger, it also has to do with how long the shaking lasts. There were quite a few buildings that came close to failure during Northridge and would have if the shaking had lasted just a few more seconds. And those were with buildings that had been up to code and as far as I know, it still isn't known why some of the failures occurred. --Dennis
