M5.1 s south of equator in Sumatra |
There were 3 quakes posted on NEIC/USGS for south of 1 deg south on or around the Sumatra subduction zone. These are the first "aftershocks" I've seen south of the equator near the last mainshock (the M8.7). This section of subduction zone was probably the most weakened by both the 8.7 and the M9.3 before. So, it bears watching carefully. I think this area should be instrumented if anyone can get time and money to do it. As I said just after the M8.7, I would be surprised if it took 100 years before this segment fails...it has had since, I think, 1833 to accumulate strain....if 50 mm/yr, that would be 8 or 9 meters...
