Re: 6.4 south of equator in Sumatra |
There has now been a M6.4, south of equator but north of the ones the day before. Both solutions for the 6.4 show left-lateral motion on a steep ENE-WSW plane. The marine geophysicist wife had noted that there is a major fracture zone in the oceanic crust that intersects the subduction zone in this area...the crust is of greatly different age on either side, and that could affect how it subducts..... I think this area REALLY needs to be instrumented.....continuous GPS, seismometers, Ocean Bottom seismometers... I'll email the links to these posts to wife and other seismologist who was just part of Japanese survey of area of M9.3....
