M9.3, 1200 km rupture

There is an article on the Sumatra earthquake on the front page of the March 1 EOS (American Geophysical Union). You have to login to see it so I did not link to it. They say the quake is Mw 9.3, which makes it #2 since 1900 after Chile 1960. They also model the rupture as being from about 3N to 14 N, or 1200+ km long. When I suggested at a Lamont record reading that it was that long, they (more than 1) dismissively said it was only 700 km or whatever....
However, the EOS article was about GPS and the GPS didn't really show anything interesting to me, because there were only 4 stations and they were too far away...

So...I'm still curious what is the consensus rupture length, and whether it is indeed now considered a 9.3.....
Chris
