Earthquake in the Queen Elizabeth Island area MB 4.9

A very unusual earthquake occurred today in the Queen Elizabeth Islands
area in northern Canada near the North Magnetic pole. NEIS is giving
the following parameters to this event:

14Aug2001 19:35:37 76.7N 107.5W MS=4.9 NEIS QUEEN ELIZABETH ISL

This is the largest earthquake to occur within 300 km of the
epicenter (an area including both the forecast and the earthquake
since Dec 27, 1972 (29 years)i when a Mb 6.0 occurred. It is the third largest ever recorded
in this region, the other (Mb 5.3) being on 11-19-1972. An earthquake of comparable
magnitude occurred most recently on Feb 5, 1978 (Mb 4.8).
