Now there is a question which shows some insight and thought -just the kind I like to answer. Following are the number of earthquakes of Mw>=7.0 with delay times before and after total and annular solar eclipses of up to 31 days. The first column is the number of days between a solar eclipse and an earthquake of Mw>=7. The second column is the number of such earthquakes with the given time difference between their occurrence and the total solar eclipse. For example, at -24 (24 days before solar eclipses) there were 13 earthquakes of Mw>=7 while at 25 (25 days after solar eclipses) there were 10 such earthquakes. These types of data are necessary to answer the question raised regarding the relationship of solar eclipses to large earthquakes. In my opinion, there is no excessive triggering of such earthquakes around the time of eclipses (-3 days to 3 days). This concurs with the data cited by Roger Hunter and Jim Berkland. Table 1: Number of Mw>=7 earthquakes per days before and after total or annular solar eclipses (1500-2001) Days # earthquakes Before Mw>=7 or 1500-2001 After -31 5 -30 13 -29 7 -28 8 -27 12 -26 6 -25 12 -24 13 -23 9 -22 15 -21 9 -20 10 -19 12 -18 11 -17 13 -16 8 -15 9 -14 8 -13 7 -12 11 -11 15 -10 14 -9 16 -8 6 -7 5 -6 11 -5 3 -4 7 -3 8 -2 11 -1 14 0 11 1 9 2 9 3 16 4 7 5 7 6 11 7 11 8 14 9 7 10 6 11 15 12 10 13 8 14 4 15 10 16 18 17 14 18 14 19 10 20 11 21 7 22 8 23 11 24 12 25 10 26 20 27 7 28 7 29 8 30 12 31 5 Looks like moving out is not necessary after all.
