Tidal triggering

John Vidale stated: "And tides ARE too small to trigger earthquakes MUCH, more than a very tiny fraction of the time. Check out my Science paper with Cochran, and in addition, I compared the entire Harvard catalog of earthquakes with a more sophisticated tidal calculation than is generally available, which I didn't publish because everyone knows already that tidal influence is tiny."

I wrote: Dear John, I read your paper (Kennedy et al.) about the tidal triggering of earthquakes and I made the same test for the population. I found that most of the people are hermaphrodites. You mixed pears and apples together. We made better tests (depending on tidal phase in 3-D tidal space) and we found that there are 2 kinds of earthquakes, which are triggered by 2 various tidal mechanisms. The significance level of this statement is better than 99%. Read our book.

The results are published in our book "Tilts, global tectonics and earthquake prediction" - Fig. 4.21 and 4.22.. I put these two figures to my gallery:

For the first time it was published here: http://www.ig.cas.cz/userdata/files/conferences/geodynamics-2007/PreliminaryProgramme.htm
