Mexico downgraded, Gulf of California pair 6.9 and 6.2 |
The Mexico quake was downgraded to 6.5 relatively quickly. But, I'm up in the middle of the night again and there had been a 6.9 followed by 6.2 aftershock in Gulf of California. This is strike-slip. One could consider these long Gulf of California transforms the start of a transition to the San Andreas fault. Canie has posted in the past that Gulf of California quakes tend to be followed by southern California quakes, but I have not noticed this myself, and have my doubts. Good grief, it sure seems like a cluster, but OK, the 8.2 Indian Ocean was triggered by the 8.6 and the 6.2 Gulf of California seems a simple aftershock, so only 3 M6+ quakes in 23 hours that are "independent", although the Mihoacan Mexico quake is only 10 degrees of Latitude south of the Gulf of California quakes. I'm in Santa Barbara-Goleta until Saturday morning and I, like Tony, am wondering what is next..except I have no supplies (and no car). Hey Brian, are you lurking? Can you stand it to post for a few days before being frustrated by your nemisis and going away again?
