off to AGU meeting in San Francisco

I'm headed from the heartland to San Franscisco in a couple hours. Man did I work hard the last couple of weeks; in addition to my own poster I am co-author on 5 other presentations, of which I am 2nd on two, one by student, where I had to do a lot of work. I was still doing 3D fault interpretation in the near offshore of San Diego last night, but got the student a figure for his poster.

These faults intersect in cross section. They are not well known and not in hazard models at all. A 30 km-long section of the Descanso fault is not even on any map I am aware of, and its shallow part passes only 5 km off the coast of San Diego. We think these are right-lateral faults, and the broader system has 1 or 2 mm/yr of slip (or could be less now), but we have no done that modeling yet. We do know that, from north to south, the San Mateo-Carlsbad splits off of the Newport-Inglewood fault (but intersects it at a couple of km depth), then the Carslbad steps right over to another "flower structure", which is the Descanso-Coronado Bank. The Descanso dips offshore (west), the others dip east. If the East dipping faults cut through the Descanso and maintain dip, the quakes would be right under San Diego, or at least close.

First time I have gone to AGU in 3 years. Last time it was just too big a meeting for me. This time I made a special session so that I have a small meeting within the big meeting.

Now I have to make a meeting itinerary, which I did not do last time. It is now pretty much required.
