Washington (Ml 5.0) earthquake and prior indications
Posted by Lowell on June 10, 2001 at 18:54:05:

An earthquake of Ml 5.0 occurred this morning in northwestern Washington
state. Currently sources are saying this is NOT an aftershock of the
Nisqually earthquake. It was felt as far away as Seattle. Current
parameters for this shock are:
10JUN2001 06:19:11 (PDT) 47.166N 123.506W 40.5km ML=5.0 N of Satsop, WA

Several predictors may have anticipated this event including:

Petra Challis - see Don's posting below. Petra had an ear tone
which she interpreted as coming from one of five areas including
Olympia Peninsula, Washington in mid-May.

Anonymous - An anonymous predictor sent NGDC a seismic alert message
specifically indicating the possibility of a mild to moderate earthquake
between California and B.C. in the next three days. (a moderate
earthquake is Ml 5-6). This forecast was made on the basis of a
geomagnetic storm which began at 21:00 UT while the West Coast was
directly under the sun (at 12 noon local time). This predictor
believes the maximum seismic effects occur sub-solar and on the opposite
side of the earth (anti-solar) when a geomagnetic storm begins. Incidentally,
a Mb 5.6 occurred antisolar to Washington in Turkmenistan today as well.
This alert was issued as of 03:00 UT this morning. The Washington earthquake
occurred at 13:19 UT today.

E.D.G. - An earthquake advisory issued last night was received from
E.D.G. It was not specific to Washington state or the west Coast,
although Southern California was mentioned.

Lowell - See posting below regarding the possibility of moderate events
on West Coast in the 3 days following strong meteoritically induced
flooding on the Gulf of Mexico, posted yesterday evening.

Now, if we could just put these types of warnings together before
an event, maybe inroads could be made into forecasting a few
earthquakes.
