global warming and iceland volcano and global earthquakes |
Well, if I'm going to "call out" climate change deniers who say nonsense, I better do the same with those who exaggerate the effects of climate change. The link is mostly pure nonsense. The writer did not say whether the glacier over the volcano had thinned before the eruption. If it had, this would be more likely to very slightly delay earthquakes there, because it is stretching, and normal fault slip is driven by the vertical loads (which would decrease if the ice above thinned). On the other hand, large-scale thinning of ice could trigger thrust earthquakes: if Greenland ice sheet suddenly completely disappeared you could get quakes (and may have at the end of the last glacial period in places like southeast Canada (??) and maybe New England (??)). Saying that Chile megathrust or Haiti or China quakes were related to global warming is nonsense in my opinion, at least at this time. Maybe if all the ice sheets were completely gone there might be a slight effect on plate motions? I'm guessing.
