Well, to be fair to Dennis I better link to a series of replies/letters about an opinion piece in the March 2008 Physics Today.
The link is to Table of Contents, and then look under "Letters": is the top one of 2.

It is free and you don't need to login: can get .pdf or .html. Some of the letters are very against and then there are a couple that are "pro".

I'll post this and then try and find the original opinion piece and link to that.
