I can agree that there may be 101 things that might lubricate a fault or trigger and earthquake, and people like Rundle and Sornette have done some good work on the implications of triggering effects. But none of this invalidates the basic tectonic cause of earthquakes, or changes the long term seismicity parameters. Any sort of triggering effect can only occur if there is something to be triggered in the first place.
