Hi Russell. You bet there is. It is known as the Cascadia fault as well as the Cascadia subduction zone. The Cascadia subduction zone is a 680-mile fault that runs 50 miles off the coast of the Pacific Northwest from Cape Mendocino in Northern California to Vancouver Island in southern British Columbia.

Records provided by buried soil layers, dead trees, and deep-sea deposits indicate to geologists that the Cascadia fault ruptures and releases this compression in large-magnitude M=8 to M=9 earthquakes about every 500-600 years. It is the upper portion of the shallowly dipping Cascadia fault that ruptures during these events; most of the rupture area is offshore. The last such earthquake occurred on January 26, 1700. It generated tsunamis that lasted for 18 hours striking the coast of Japan.

Brian Atwater who has extensively explored the zone says there are indications that the fault has ruptured as one complete unit, but that there are also indications that it has ruptured in segments. The last time it ruptured it was as a single unit from Cape Mendocino to Vancouver Island. Take Care…Don in creepy town
