Tony...I'm not a big fan of unnecessary terminology, but to communicate we need some...you are mixing up Intensity and magnitude. You mean magnitude. Don got the answer correct (although it is probably more complicated). I think this is not well understood...why some quakes stop and some take off. If we understood this better, we might be closer to short-term prediction..
