Burney Quake |
Hi All. The M>4.4 Burney quake is a normal quake. That means the motion of the fault was downward. There are 3 unnamed faults in the area. Im almost sure which fault it occurred in. That would be the second fault from the right or from the east. All 3 faults are NW/SE trending. The quake occurring where it did is almost certain to be associated with the Walker Lane Belt which is a section of California that is being pulled apart. The Walker Lane Belt starts near the southern end of Owens Valley at the edge of the Mojave Desert maybe a little further south. This area has volumes of evidence of volcanic activity all over the place. You cant walk anywhere without walking on lava. There are approximately 70 cinder cones located between Burney and Chester with some in the Eagle Lake area to the east. I wouldnt be surprised if we get something in the Medicine Lake area, which is located in a rift called the Eastern California Shear Zone (ECSZ). I dont expect anything much larger, but we could get a few more about the same magnitude. Its one of those wait and see things.
