I also agree that "ear tones" are probably not true sounds. One piece of support evidence for that would be the fact that people apparently often hear them in one ear or the other regardless of what direction they are facing. A true sound would be heard in both ears at the same time. Or it would shift from ear to ear as a person turned his or her head.
