Bombay Beach shutoff |
Assuming the SCEC page is operating OK, the Bombay Beach sequence last had any event at 5:03 AM today Pacific. This would be a few hours after the 9:26 AM UT China event. I find these shutoffs interesting-the events in LA basin also shut off abruptly. Also, this is my first post. I am an old friend of Lowell's and think he has great credibility on certain earthquake related issues, but I may have questions about other statements. I am a professional researcher who works on, among other things, active faults in California. But, I am not a seismologist, and am strictly an amateur concerning earthquake prediction. But, I am open to the idea that the amateurs may be on to some things that the pros are not willing to consider. For example, I like Lowell's idea that there might be triggering at certain angular distances after major quakes. We'll see. Also concerning Bombay Beach: the M6.6 right-lateral Superstition Hills earthquake in the 1980s (1987?) was preceded by 1/2 day (?) by a left-lateral M6.2 Elmore Ranch earthquake on a cross fault. Apparently, yesterday's swarm is on a cross fault. Strike-slip earthquakes are driven by shear stress resolved onto the fault plane. Slip is prevented by normal stress (stress component perpendicular to the fault). If a larger left-lateral quake was to occur on a cross fault that intersects the San Andreas, on a fault to its southwest, the normal stress would be reduced on the San Andreas in the area north of the intersection. In other words, the San Andreas would be made weaker in that area. But, if the San Andreas is 50 years from failing on its own (for example), then such an earthquake on a cross fault might not set it off. These effects can be calculated, but not by me.
