Aurorae and earthquake lights

It is possible to see aurorae from strong geomagnetic storms anywhere in the United States. It is quite possible that what you observed was an aurora. Look again tonight. A very strong geomagnetic storm began several hours ago, with solar wind from the X-class event yesterday. This promises to be good viewing time for aurorae. By the way, aurora are often confused with "earthquake lights". Some of the "best" observations of earthquake lights occurred during strong geomagnetic storms and were probably aurorae.
