2 rattlesnake day |
I'm hanging out at the Geology Field camp of "heartland U" on the lowet slope of the Wind River Mts near Lander Wyoming. Today I went out to look at an inactive fault with a couple of Grad students. I came relatively close to stepping on 2 different rattlesnakes; the first rattled at about 3 m away; I was by myself, The second was closer, and one of the grad students warned me that I was about to step on it. After several hours walking out the fault I made a conclusion: that the fault was stupid and annoying. It had no slip indicators. The grad student and his advisor thinks it is a high-angle (very steep) reverse fault. I thought it was strike-slip. Now I think it may be half way between (oblique). I'll be scarce through Aug 10 as I am traveling with variable internet: here we have it in a work room now and then but it is slow.
