Re: 4.7 Arkansas |
Was strike-slip. The "P" axis is ENE-WSW. An earthquake is strain, what causes it is stress. The central and eastern USA have ENE-WSW maximum principle horizontal stress....I think at high levels because the rocks are stronger than on a plate boundary. I don't think there is any limit to how large a quake can be by messing with fluid pressures. I have some vague receollection that the injection well at the colorado arsenal may have triggered up to M6 (??). Water reservoirs have been linked to quakes up to M7. Someone must know what is going on: it would be crazy if these quakes were not well located: if there was not a local network put out. there is an office and university in Memphis that work on these kind of quakes. Sue Hough is interested. Leonardo Seeber is doing field work in Bangladesh: he is my usual contact for stuff like this. If an injection well, there should be a very clear spatial relationship with time and injection rates. I don't see anything on Sue's web site on this (but lots of interesting stuff on predicitions and triggered quakes). I don't seen anything on the Memphis Center for earthquake research and information.
