M7.5 southern Sumatra |
There just was a M7.5 southern Sumatra. There is not yet a focal mechanism, but location and size suggest subduction zone thrust. This is Mentawai region, where Kerry Sieh presented 2 years ago at AGU that despite a couple of M8s south of the equator, the majority of the Mentawai gap still had not ruptured and there was high hazard, including tsunami, to Padang, which I recall has about a million people (??) and is low-lying (??).
