M7.0 Christchurch New Zealand |
There was a m 7.0 strike slip quake 40 km west of Christchurch New Zealand. Part of the South Island of New Zealand have right-lateral fault zones (the NE part), and the major Alpine faults if oblique right reverse (in the west). I spent a couple of days in Christchurch on the way to and from Antarctica in 1996, and I think earlier on a test cruise. It is a nice small city. It has rather large coastal redwoods (Sequoia), that were planted in the 1930s (or was that the north island?): they grow much faster there than California.
