glacial marine terraces |
We have been running along just offshore of the coast of St. Marc Peninsula north of Port-au-Prince for the last 4 hours. The display of the multibeam bathymetry has been showing planar gently sloping surfaces with the landwards edges being steep or even a cliff. I (we?) think these are marine terraces from previous glacial periods. The inner edges of these are shorelines that were horizontal at one time. We expect that these have been folded. One of these a couple hours ago was at about 200 m depth, so if indeed a shoreline, must have subsided as I expected.
