small quakes are easily to notice |
my guess is that Kris's study has the advantage that small quakes occur at a faster rate than large quakes, so one can spot an increase in the rate of seismicity of less than a factor of two over a couple of hours. The bigger quakes probably have a similar increase in rate of activity, but the increase is harder to find and document.
