Interestingly, the existence of earthquake lights during, and even precursory to, earthquakes, has been accepted by the seismological community for some time now. At least the USGS seems to think so. See link.

In the list of references, Susan Hough's article and the one about the 1975 Kalapna earthquake make for interesting reading.
