I dunno, Penny - the quake seems to be way to the East of Mt. Shasta. Well off to the side of even the flanks of the volcano. I used both the topographic map - clickable from USGS' "Recent Earthquakes" site (I set the topo to "Large" and scale to "1:250,000"). You can see Mt. Shasta well to the west of the quake, and the contour lines at the epicenter have broadened way out indicating more or less level terrain - and I used the clickable Google Earth link - showing the same thing. The latter source especially shows it very clearly not below the mountain. I believe the 14 miles refers to Mt. Shasta the mountain, not the town. It is below the 4400-foot contour line. The summit of Mt. Shasta is more than 10,000 feet higher...... There is a road which terminates close to the epicenter, and clear-cut patches all around it - (you gotta zoom in at Google Earth to see that).
