Offshore EQs |
Hi All, I have often wondered if an offshore earthquake is felt the same way as one whose epicenter is on dry land. I know distance from shore plays a part in this equation; and obviously, if the quake were large enough, tsumanis, but otherwise are there any other variables beside depth of hypocenter, distance from shore, etc? We have the San Gregorio fault running offshore the length of Monterey Bay. I'm guessing it's farthest point from land may be 20 miles. From our house three miles from the beach, would a Mg.7 EQ on this fault feel much different than a Mg.7 twenty miles inland? Does all that water do anything to "soften the blow?"
